 The small screw press, or fly press in jewellery making. click here to see more information how the press and tools were used to make jewellery components. The set of tools below were used to make the components of a square top, diamond cluster ring.

A picture taken 1950 - 52
This is the toolmaker that made the tools, Mr. Horsey (sp?) seen here pretending to file a die block, and the set of punches above can be seen on the bench.

Bench jewellers in the same workshop c1950. The benches were made by the same cabinet maker Bert Lipman, (possibly from East St Kilda), who made the bench I've worked on for the last 6 years. Click here for a guided tour of my bench. It was the foreman's bench from this workshop.

Below is a mouth blown spirit torch from the workshop above, it was used for soldering when town gas was not available due to Gas Strikes in the 1950's. The torch below or one very similar can be seen on the bench above, just to the left of the shoulder of the central jeweller.
