Brass and ebony mortice gauge.
Reg'd 970 Feb19 1847
The gauge has a screw at each end. The one on the
handle end adjusts the inner brass tube (with the cutters) in and out,
to set the position of the stock. At the other end the screw sets the
distance between the cutters.
A premium tool at the time it was made, with a lovely "heft"
and perfect balance.
